NEWS: Flappy Bird has finally been put down. No, really.

For the uninitiated, Flappy Bird is…ahem…was a freeware game where you would pilot a dumpy, ill-fitted bird through a series of obstacles by tapping on the screen.

Right off the bat, one might notice that the pipe obstacles, (initial) background, success sound and even the titular protagonist have an overly striking resemblance to a certain flagship Nintendo title.

Dony Nguyen, the game’s creator, said last week that the game would be taken offline over the weekend. True to form, it vanished from both the Google Play store and the App Store late Saturday night.

According to Nguyen, “people were overusing his game”, and he made the decision to “take it down”.

It was estimated that the game was making $50,000 per day in advertising revenue.

I can’t even pretend to understand the logistics. But how can it not be a legal issue? Tax, maybe? Who knows.

Opportunists were quick to strike, putting their phones “pre-loaded with Flappy Bird” on eBay. The current highest bid is $90,200 for a 16gb iPhone 5 Sprint phone “With Flappy Bird Installed”.

I have no words.
