NEWS: Looks like the Tin Hats may be on to something…

Remember when people were nervous out about Xbox One’s ”always on” Kinect feature, for fear of others having a voyeuristic eye into their private lives?

Turns out, they were on to something.

Britain’s Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ), in conjunction with the United States NSA, collected webcam stills, chat records, metadata and other information from internet users, regardless of whether they were “citizens of interest” or not.

According to an article published earlier today by UK’s The Guardian,In one six-month period in 2008 alone, the agency collected webcam imagery – including substantial quantities of sexually explicit communications – from more than 1.8 million Yahoo user accounts globally.

But that’s not all.

The operation, codenamed “Optic Nerve” also expressly stated interest in the Xbox 360′s Kinect camera. The leaked report from 2008 (!) stated that the Kinect camera “…generated fairly normal webcam traffic…and was being evaluated as part of a wider program.

Again, that’s from a leaked report from 2008.

Unsurprisingly, both the NSA and GCHQ have declined to comment on this matter.

The GCHQ spokesperson did offer this statement, though:

all of GCHQ’s work is carried out in accordance with a strict legal and policy framework which ensures that our activities are authorised, necessary and proportionate, and that there is rigorous oversight, including from the secretary of state, the interception and intelligence services commissioners and the Parliamentary Intelligence and Security Committee.

NSA spokesperson Vanee Vines offered a similar statement:

“The NSA works with a number of partners in meeting its foreign intelligence mission goals, and those operations comply with US law and with the applicable laws under which those partners operate.”
