NEWS: Nintendo pulling the plug on Wi-fi for DS and Wii

Late last night, Nintendo made a surprising announcement: as of May 20th, 2014, they will be “globally terminating” Wi-Fi connectivity for all of it’s Wii, WiiWare, DS and DSIWare titles, without exception. That means no more Mario Kart, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Pokémon, Animal Crossing, Zelda or WarioWare online connectivity, matchmaking or leaderboards will be active after May 20th. Free add-on content, “mystery gifts”, sharing of in-game content/characters and sharing of player-generated content will also be terminated.

Also, since both WiiSpeak and the WiiSpeak Channel require a Wi-Fi connection to work, they’ll be rendered inoperable altogether.

Unsurprisingly, access to the Wii shop and DSi shop will be unaffected.
